Climate Disinformation Workshop

27 February 2025, The Hague, Oxfam Novib, Mauritskade 9, 2514 HD Den Haag

Background

European citizens are all exposed to an infodemic which can severely impact their democratic participation and engagement. This may include disinformation, misinformation, fake news, and other types of interference on different issues related to public life. A pre-emptive approach needs to be taken to decrease the worsening impact, such as using vaccinations against the spread of a pandemic.

The IMMUNE 2 INFODEMIC project empowered EU citizens with practical tools—digital literacy, media literacy, and critical thinking—to counter disinformation on themes like elections, COVID-19, and migration. Now, IMMUNE 2 INFODEMIC 2 broadens its focus to include AI-enabled disinformation, Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI), and climate change, delivering targeted workshops and e-learning to equip citizens with the skills to navigate this complex landscape.

Vulnerable citizens, having limited or no knowledge about mis/disinformation but who are using social media extensively will be targeted by the project in different forms of in-situ and online events with the support of multipliers including media professionals, social media influencers, and civil society organisations

Aim and Scope

Disinformation and misinformation pose significant challenges, undermining public understanding and democratic participation. Climate disinformation, in particular, jeopardizes environmental policies and public trust in science, solutions, and advocates. This Climate Change Workshop offers a unique opportunity to explore the evolving tactics of climate disinformation, uncovering new narratives that threaten trust and identifying strategies to counter them. We warmly welcome you to join this conversation with leading experts on cutting-edge research and practical tools for addressing misinformation effectively.

This workshop features expert presentations on climate disinformation narratives, followed by guided discussions designed to promote collaborative learning and generate innovative solutions. Through these interactive sessions,  we hope to develop collaborative actionable strategies to bring back to your organisations and communities. By fostering a diverse exchange of ideas, this event empowers you to combat climate disinformation and strengthen democratic participation effectively.

This meeting also serves as a valuable opportunity to connect with (Netherlands-based) organisations that are actively working on these issues. Especially in the current climate  –where political will and financial support for tackling climate change and disinformation may be lacking– fostering collaboration and sharing expertise is more important than ever. We hope this can be a platform to strengthen networks, exchange best practices, and explore new avenues for joint action to safeguard democratic participation, public trust in science and policy, and effective climate action.
